People really get confused between these two terms. But to clear things up, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Search Engine Marketing (SEM) are two terms that almost mean the same thing. They both relate to making websites popular and they both involve search engines.
The only difference is that SEM is a lot broader than SEO. Basically, SEM is everything that involves making a website popular so that it gains a high degree of traffic and generates profit or gains whatever the website is supposed to accomplish. This includes traditional advertising, paying to get included in online databases and signing up with pay-per click deals. On the other hand, SEO the use of search engines in particular to achieve the same effect. By strategically using keywords and other stuff to be included in one’s web content, people who use search engines will more likely to come across the website and join the overall traffic.
So you can actually say that SEO is a kind of SEM. But in truth, many people actually just stick with SEO in general because many believe that it is enough to successfully promote a website. Besides, SEO is almost cost free.
